Alan Spence, aberdeen, 4am

4 in the morning

the seagulls’ call

an awakening

4 in the morning

oystercatcher’s cry

cold clarity

4 in the morning

the specificity

of the clock’s tick

4 in the morning

the thin time

between worlds

4 in the morning

nowhere else

nothing else

Alan Spence is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Aberdeen and the author of many books of poetry and fiction. His latest novel is Night Boat (Canongate).
